Anyone can get the flu at any age, even if you are healthy. Related complications include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

Some people are at greater risk for serious complications related to flu. 

  • People age 65 and older.

  • Young children (especially age 2 and under).

  • Pregnant women (and up to 2 weeks postpartum).

  • Residents in nursing homes and long term care facilities.

  • People with chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes and extreme obesity among others.

  • Individuals with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as HIV/AIDS or cancer.

The most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccination each year.
